Unclaimed Vehicles May Be Sold to Car Dismantlers

Most of the time, vehicles transported to Greenwood Towing, Inc.’s Baltimore storage facility are claimed by their rightful owners. Abandoned but Not Forgotten

Vehicles that remain in our possession after legal notification and a state-mandated waiting period are transferred to Greenwood Motor Co., another Greenwood entity that is a licensed automotive dismantler and recycler (ADR). When the proper paperwork from Maryland’s Motor Vehicle Administration is in hand, our abandoned-car inventory is sold for parts to other ADRs.

The state MVA issues ADR licenses and restricts salvage sales to licensed buyers in an attempt to prevent illegal “chop shops” and unscrupulous towing companies from capitalizing on others’ misfortunes. Applicants are subject to criminal background checks and must show proof of insurance coverage, business registration, and zoning compliance.

Licensed car dismantlers, auto recyclers, and scrap processors typically acquire salvage vehicles — which are not allowed to operate on public roads — with the intent of taking them apart and individually selling parts and materials.
